Dactylorhiza fuchsii var. okellyi is a subspecies of the Common Spotted-orchid; the main differences being that its leaves are unmarked and the flowers are pure white. It was named after enterprising Burren farmer and amateur botanist, Patrick B O'Kelly of Ballyvaughan, who ran a nursery business at the end of the nineteenth century selling Burren plants - clumps of spring gentians at six bob a dozen, bee orchids at three for half a crown!
