The white-tailed bumblebee (Bombus lucorum) was accidently introduced to Iceland in the 70's and the species rapidly colonised both populated areas and natural habitats. At the same time, the long-established heath bumblebee (Bombus jonellus) population began to fall.
Very few butterflies have ever been spotted in Iceland due to its harsh climate, but it is home to a variety of moth species, with around 80 species documented in the country.
Dandelions grow everywhere in Iceland and in huge abundance. As you can see from the photos, they are an essential part of the food chain by feeding a huge variety of insects. Dandelions are rich in vitamins and minerals and the whole plant is edible from flower to root. The leaves make a great addition to salads while the root of the plant has long been used as a coffee substitute.
