Skaftafell is known for its outlet glaciers, with Skaftafellsjökull being closest to the visitor centre and campsite, a tongue of the larger Vatnajökull ice cap which is a bit bigger than County Cork. The glacier ice flows down a valley, contributing to the landscape's erosion and shaping the surrounding rivers and ecosystems.
