Order Lepidoptera: there are over 1400 known species in Ireland, the vast majority of which are moths with only 35 species of butterfly in the mix. The most obvious difference between Irish butterflies & moths is in the antennae, which are knobbed or clubbed on butterflies. Moths' antennae are various shapes with only the Burnet moths having clubbed antennae.
