Saxifraga is a large genus of perennial plants, commonly known as saxifrages, which means "stone-breaker". The name refers to their habit of growing in rock crevices, such as stone walls and the Burren, or possibly it's a reference to an ancient medicinal use for breaking up kidney stones.
